in the meantime, thank you for your patience.)
Welcome and thank you for visiting Coastal Seams!
This is Georgia’s site for homesewn items and includes information on what I currently offer for sale.
All items are designed & sewn by me in California (or elsewhere in the U.S.
when I'm visiting family & friends) and can be shipped anywhere in the United States.
You may reach me at
CoastalSeams (at) gmail.com or 650-941-1068
or via postal address as shown at the top & bottom of this page (you may also
continue to use my personal email address for those of you who have it).
Protection
of your contact information including email address is absolutely assured.
Information will not be shared, sold or otherwise distributed.
Items I am currently offering for sale
include a few styles & sizes
of tote bags for various purposes:
Lightweight, sturdy
& reusable bags available in 1) nylon/pack-cloth & 2) polypro mesh. All of these styles
have many uses including as gift bags, for shopping & farmers markets, art supplies, as a
roomy purse, book bag, camping gear, tools, keepsake bags, classes, meetings, gardening supplies,
laundry (both wet & dry), small plants, cut flowers, host/ess gift and
more...
The color choices offer "something for everyone".
Sizes
for all fabric types:
Large (very roomy at approx 19" high x 18"
wide) with pocket on outside
front
and straps/handles that wrap front to back across the bottom for extra
reinforcement.
Medium (approx 12" high & 14" wide) with outside pocket on both front & back; and straps/handles that wrap front to back across the bottom for extra reinforcement.
Small: size can be customized to your need.
Many
colors & combinations are available; please check with me for the latest
availability. Colors I offer typically include forest green, sapphire blue, dark
brown, fuchsia, yellow, black, hot pink, turquoise, purple, desert sand and
red. Straps are also available in many colors, providing an opportunity for
"mix & match".
Photographs
will be placed here in the future; in the meantime you can see some of my
bags at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/coastalseams/
Prices for sturdy & reinforced poly-mesh bags & standard nylon bags:
Large: $22/each * (one external pocket)
Medium: $18/each * (two external pockets)
Small: price varies depending on size of bag & length of handles
Prices for sturdy, reinforced & very abrasion-resistant "430 denier" nylon/pack cloth bags:
Large: $24/each * (one external pocket)
Medium: $20/each * (two external pockets)
Small:
price varies depending on size of bag & length of handles
* Plus applicable sales tax & shipping. I charge only what the shipping
costs me, or as close to it as possible. In most cases I am able to re-use
packaging from other (clean) shipments. I also deliver or meet in person when
that opportunity presents (combined with other errands from my 'out of town'
location, etc.).
Lead Time:
For
items in stock, will ship within a few days from order. I can respond more
quickly when needed - just let me know!
For custom color selection one week plus shipping time (or meeting in person
for delivery) is
usually sufficient for 1-3 bags. In general it depends on quantity ordered and time of
year, and I can give you that information when you inquire or order. In all
cases I will communicate with you via phone or email (your choice) so you know
when to expect your merchandise.
Payment may be made by check or cash and
is due when items are delivered. Coastal Seams is a business
registered with the state of California, and I account for cash just as for checks. In the future I hope to be able to accept credit cards, but currently
it's excessively and impractically expensive.
(For special/customized orders that could not be sold to others once customized,
I may ask for partial payment in advance).
Gift certificates available:
If you are not sure what colors to choose, or you need to order a gift on short notice, I can provide a customized gift
certificate for you to give to your recipient.
They can then choose the fabric & colors and return it to me via email, phone or postal mail.
Gift certificates are available on paper for $2 each (can be paid for as part of your bag order) or for no extra charge in PDF format (for you to either print out or email to your recipient).
Available
after May 2008: Cotton-duck tote bags with quilt-quality
cotton lining, an internal zippered pocket and flat pocket on outside front. Shoulder-length straps wrap
around the reinforced bottom resulting in a "shaped" bag. Available in
several colors & lining options. A photo is available at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/coastalseams/
(the bag in this photo has been customized with a photograph for a donation; the standard version being
offered features a flat pocket on the outside front in lieu of a
photograph). Please allow a minimum of two weeks lead time for this item -
thank you! Prices for this item are $35/medium and $40/large.
Special Order: "Photo Totes": Cotton-duck tote bags as
described above, with photograph (printed on fabric) on outside front, in lieu
of outside pocket (see photographs of this style on photos page listed above).
Photographs for front of bag can be one of yours (provided in digital format),
or choose from mine.
Prices for "Photo Totes" start at $65 for medium and $70 for large. Lead
time: Special order & not always available. Please check with me for latest
information.
Other products will be available in the
future as well, as Coastal Seams evolves over time.
About Georgia:
I am a sewist ("one
who sews"). I started learning to sew in 1965 both at home and in "junior
high" in San Carlos, California. My first machine was my mom's beautiful 1940 New Home sewing
machine; which I still have,
cherish and use (along with a few other machines). I was fortunate to be able to
take sewing classes in all four years of our public high school.
I have
loved sewing from the first cutting & stitching, and am very grateful for the
encouragement from the start & ongoing from my family and friends.
Garments and other items I enjoy making vary widely … from lingerie to tote
bags and summer dresses to shade tarps. This includes grocery & garden bags,
stuff sacks, shorts, bathrobes, sachets, kayak cockpit covers, tank tops & camisoles, skirts,
pillowcases, shirts, pants, PJs, shrugs, jackets & more.
As
a lifelong & "first & foremost" nature lover & outdoors woman I find most of my inspiration for
sewing in colors, textures & shapes in nature.
A few words about Sewing:
At times people will comment that "sewing is a dying art". I am happy to say this is not at all true, and in fact sewing is gaining in popularity in the U.S.
across age groups and demographics.
I do think that sewing has largely been a
"quiet art" ... thus the impression of not being popular. Sewing and other
fiber arts are increasingly becoming an "outspoken
art", as more people are able to share their
interests, talent, projects and businesses using the internet; as well as by joining
and participating in the growing number of sewing and fiber arts organizations
and groups.
In fact, if you have been to a Quilt Show or exhibit in the last several years
... you have no doubt as to the "wild popularity" of sewing among people
of all ages and both genders.
Why the name “Coastal Seams”?
I
chose this name, an earth-related term, because it combines my love of our planet,
my home region and sewing.
Salvage (“rescued”) items: I enjoy sewing with new materials, such as
for the items offered above. I also love working with fabrics, fasteners &
embellishments that have been recovered from other items … to satisfy my desire
to “reduce, re-use and recycle”. It’s very rewarding to give new life to items
that have been cast aside. Any items made by me from previously used materials
will be clearly identified in the description as a courtesy to those who strive
to buy only “second hand” (previously used or "re-purposed") items.
If you have such materials that you would like to have added to or used in an
item (embellishments, fasteners, clean & gently used pack cloth, canvas,
denim, shade cloth, cotton, wool, etc.) please contact me so we can discuss if
I can use it.
Recycling: Packaging, paper, materials and other supplies that cannot be
re-used, incorporated into useable items or donated are recycled to the
greatest extent possible.
Memberships & Donations: Coastal Seams is a member of
Hometown Peninsula, the American Sewing Guild
and Peninsula Wearable Arts Guild aka PenWAG (see links below).
Custom bags have been donated for several non-profit organizations' silent auctions (including Yosemite Association, California State Parks Foundation and local schools) & will be in the future as well.
